RECAP: Top 11 Performances & Elimination (SPOILERS)

TOP 11 Elimination

Season 17 of The Voice is jam-packed with such talented contestants, it’s getting increasingly difficult to see contestants get eliminated. This week Shane Q from Team Kelly and Myracle Holloway from Team Gwen were in the bottom two. Shane Q sang one of his best performances of the season with “Jealous.” Myracle followed with an absolutely beautiful rendition of “You Are So Beautiful.” During the commercial break, the results from the live votes for the instant save rolled in. Shane beat Myracle with 53% of the vote versus Myracle 47%. “In no world should either one of you be leaving,” Shane’s coach, Kelly Clarkson told them. Gwen Stefani added, “Last night, you were absolutely flawless. Just like Kelly said, you deserve to be here. You are unbelievable, you are magic. And thank you. Thanks for letting me work with you.”

TOP 11 Performances

This week on The Voice the fans picked out the tunes for their favorite contestants. The songs ranched from the Doors to Selena to R.E.M. The fan picks are always a favorite episode. It’s interesting to see contestants sing songs often unexpected and how they make them their own.

TEAM LEGEND

Katie Kaden

Team Legend has been a favorite and tough contender from the beginning and it’s not hard to see why. First Katie Kaden came out looking like a 1940s Hollywood dream, echoing thoughts of Rita Hayworth in Gilda. Katie’s fans picked Harry Nilsson’s “Without You.” She admitted it was a challenge, but she was excited to sing a ballad. During her interview with Culturally Obsessed, she laughed as she said her mom was excited to hear her sing in her “pretty voice” instead of her usual “cool voice.” She also gave a shot out to the school where her sister is a teacher.

Will Breman

Will might have done my favorite song of the evening. His fans picked “Light My Fire” by The Doors. A song so strongly tied into Rock history and pop culture has to be a daunting task to even begin to approach, but Will killed it. His arrangement of the song was beautifully done and he somehow did the impossible and made “Light My Fire” his own. During his interview, he talked about working on the arrangement with John Legend and also gave a special thanks to his music teacher who was in the audience that evening.

Marybeth Byrd

After her mom introduced her via satellite, Marybeth Byrd sang an emotional rendition of “Stars” by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. John Legend told her she sounded “magical” and during her interview, Marybeth told us that she felt her fans picked a perfect song for her. She also wanted to thank all her fans not only in her home state of Arkansas but nationwide.

TEAM KELLY

Shane Q

Shane Q’s fans picked “Mercy” for him to sing by Shawn Mendes. Shane has actually sung this song once before, albeit not on a stage on live t.v. in front of thousands of people, but at a Sacramento coffee house called Shine. Shane definitely made the song his own and had us cracking up during the interview when he reminded “The Shane Q-tees” and “Shane-gels” to vote for him.

Jake Hoot

Not to be outdone Jake Hoot piped in after Shane, reminding the “Hooters” to vote for him. Jake Hoot who has risen to be a favorite among fans and one of the strongest contenders of the season, sang “Very Light in the House” by Trace Adkins.

Hello Sunday

The young Duo, Hello Sunday came out in of the most impressive outfits of all the past seasons. The talented ladies were dressed in an impressive array of rainbow sequins and pizzaz. Their fans picked out the song “The Middle” by Zedd, Maren Morris, and Grey. Hello Sunday brought their own sass to the song and as always it was fun to watch them play off of each other.

TEAM GWEN

Rose Short

Rose Short came out singing in an awe-inspiring layered dress of bright red tulle. Rose’s fans picked out “Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney. Rose gave a solid performance. It was definitely a song that highlighted her strengths and proved she is a contestant to watch out for.

Myracle Holloway

Myracle’s fans picked out “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M. It was a joy to see her take on R.E.M. Myracle’s performance was absolutely beautiful, vulnerable and emotional. Her voice gave me goosebumps and during her interview, she told us that she feels like her fans really know her and loved singing this song.

Joana Martinez

Joana Martinez looked ethereal as she came out in a giant softly lit halo. It was reminiscent of Paper Moon. Joana’s fans chose “Dreaming of You” by Selena. The song was heartfelt and Gwen called her performance “flawless”. While speaking with us, she told us while she’s a fan Selena she wasn’t very familiar with that particular song. She loved learning to sing it.

TEAM BLAKE

Ricky Duran

Ricky Duran was another buzzed-about favorite of the evening. His fans picked “Downtown Train” by Rod Stewart. Duran made sure to mention the song was also sung by the legendary Tom Waits. Ricky’s performance was incredibly strong and polished. When speaking to us he said he felt the song really worked for him since he has a sort of rasp to his voice similar to Rod Stewart. He also spoke about getting more confident when singing without a guitar.

Kat Hammock

Kat looked like a magical bohemian princess as she sang her fan’s choice, “I’ll Fly Away” by Gillian Welch & Alison Krauss. Kat does have a very special voice and performed the song with a haunting beauty. She told us that she felt that the song really resonated with her and was so glad the fans picked it.

With the talent so abundant on Season 17 of The Voice don’t forget to vote for your favorite artist Monday nights after the live performances on NBC.
